From jazz festivals to day trips: East Preston’s retirement home where fun is guaranteed

Making the decision to leave the home you made fond memories in can be difficult, but this friendly and energetic care home helps make that choice a little easier.

Since 1985, Green Willow Residential Care Home, in East Preston near Littlehampton, has been welcoming older members of the community. It offers a high level of individualized care that includes a range of stimulating activities to ensure residents continue to live their lives to the fullest.

When experienced and highly trained staff aren’t providing person-centred care, they make sure residents are entertained and have something to engage with if they choose. Families say staff members are “really friendly, professional and ready to help to make things as easy as possible”.

Residents of Green Willow are encouraged to explore their interests, be it gardening or crafting!

Those who live at Green Willow have the chance to try new activities and pursue their lifelong hobbies. These can include games, exercise groups, reading, manicures, baking and crafts, all customized to the resident’s interests and abilities. Residents enjoy regular trips and excursions to local attractions – they choose where they want to go at regular residents’ meetings. Green Willow recognizes that wellness isn’t just about activities and events, so residents help around the house and spend quiet time with staff to enhance their lives. The Wellness Team is a key part of getting to know new residents.

On sunnier days, residents can step outside and soak up the rays from the house’s beautiful garden, tended by green-fingered residents, as well as two gardeners.

Green Willow staff members work closely with residents and their families to ensure that residents live the most independent life possible and are supported but also encouraged by the friendly team, 24 hours a day.

As well as an engaging social life, residents also enjoy bright, beautifully presented en-suite bedrooms, which they can furnish and decorate with their own photos and personal effects. Most rooms have lovely garden views, and many have patio doors for easy access.

The house also has a superb fully assisted spa bath and shower, hair salon and treatment room. The two communal living rooms and dining room also allow level access to the secluded gardens, making it easy for all residents to spend time outside.

Residents enjoy fun activities

As far as food is concerned, the residents are well served. The hotel’s team of service staff prepare a wonderful range of home-cooked meals and, where possible, source home-grown vegetables and herbs from the garden.

The kitchen team ensures that residents are involved in menu planning to ensure flexibility in choices and preferences, as well as diet and nutrition. During the hottest days of summer, residents often choose to eat out and birthdays are always treated as a special occasion at any Kew Care Group home, with food to match!

Green Willow makes sure to celebrate holidays and cultural events, often with themed meals and activities!

All of that is what really makes Green Willow stand out, and this summer the house is bringing back its annual Jazz in the Garden event on Thursday, June 9, 2022, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the first time since the pandemic began. Additionally, to make the event even more special, staff, residents and their families, as well as the local community, will be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Here is a bit more information about the upcoming event:

Jazz in the Gardens Festival

Each year, Green Willow Residential Care Home organizes a Jazz in the Garden Festival Open Day as part of the annual East Preston Festival where the local community comes together to share the joy of living in such a special part of the world – located between the sea and countryside.

This year’s jazz event will commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s 70th birthday

Visitors and residents set up deckchairs in the garden and the house offers cream teas, Pimms, cake stalls and craft bits – a delightful scene with a live jazz band to provide a fun atmosphere , reflecting the close community of this village.

Josie Dalli, manager of Green Willow, is delighted to be hosting this popular garden party again this year, she said: “Our Jazz in the Garden event is always very special, but this year will be even more so – The Queen’s Jubilee is a big celebration across the country and our residents of Green Willow will remember her coronation in 1953 and how they celebrated it then.

Regular outings are organized with the contribution and request of the residents

Josie told us how Green Willow decided to mark the celebration and preserve the memory for future generations: “We will be planting a tree for the Jubilee as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy’s unique tree planting initiative to improve the environment – creating a legacy in honor of the leadership of the Queen of the Nation We have an aging orchard in the beautiful Green Willow Gardens and we will be planting a new fruit tree with our residents to commemorate the Jubilee of the queen and we have a plate ready to go.

“The residents of Green Willow love the garden and enjoy planting, harvesting and preparing fruits and vegetables from the garden and the menu is always seasonal and varied with local produce.”
